listai.tools is an independent directory of AI tools. Every listing is filed by what the tool makes — writing, images, video, audio, code, or an action taken on your behalf — and every listing is read by a person before it goes live.
Why file tools that way
Most directories file tools by industry or by job title, and both change with the marketing. A product that was a "content marketing platform" in March is an "AI growth copilot" by August, and it has been moved twice without changing at all. What it does has not moved: it writes prose. So the top-level cut here is the output, and the softer questions — who it is for, what it plugs into, what it costs — live underneath it as categories and filters, where a tool can hold several answers at once.
It also matches how people actually search. You know whether you need words or pictures long before you know what to call the job.
What is deliberately not here
Only things somebody can go and use. No MCP servers, no skill bundles, no prompt packs, no bare model weights. Those are components, and a directory that mixes components with products makes both harder to find — a search for "a tool that transcribes my meetings" should not return a protocol server.
There is also nothing here that was written to fill the page. The directory launched empty and fills one reviewed listing at a time, which is slower than scraping a competitor's index and is the only way the entries are worth reading.
How ranking works
Listings are ordered by upvotes. Not by a score we compute, not by a formula with weights only we can see — by a count of people who pressed the button, which anybody reading the page can check against the number printed on it. Paid tiers exist. They buy speed through the review queue and placement in specific slots, and those slots are labelled. They do not move the ranking or a listing's position in a category. If they did, the ranking would be an advertisement and worth exactly what an advertisement is worth.
